In business, I think one of the main ones is the importance of efficient continuity management. It is a contingency instrument, which serves as a kind of backup for any institution.
In countries with an eminence of conflicts or even natural disasters, it is a recurring practice. This is the case in Japan, due to the unforeseen nature, or even our neighbor Colombia, due to the history of armed conflict and also thanks to the constant earthquakes.
In Brazil, except for large companies and institutions, business continuity management was not very popular. Until the Covid-19 pandemic. We saw the result of this film: in a few weeks, working methods, strategic purposes and even the presence in the market had to be revised.
In the last IBGE estimate, 716,000 companies had already closed their doors. Of that amount, four out of 10 attributed the reason to the pandemic. Proof of these numbers can be seen with the naked eye. Certainly, you must have seen, in your city, the continuous emptying of commercial rooms in recent months.
However, the full side of the glass should be highlighted. In Rio Grande do Sul, 87% of small businesses closed in the pandemic have already resumed their activities, of which 30% intend to expand the business, according to research by Sebrae. In the city of São Paulo, the number of new companies grew again at levels similar to January 2020, according to the IRS.
These are some good examples of the gradual recovery of the economy, during the serious health crisis that we are going through. In this scenario, business continuity management must be guided by the preservation of life, responsible return and data-based decision making. And the technology is there to help us with that.

The exception in the public sector
In the public sector, the rule in this pandemic appears to be poor management. Acquisition of medicines without scientific proof, installation of unused field hospitals at a gold price and complaints of misappropriation of funds are some examples of what we have seen in the news involving public entities.
But for every rule there is an exception. I would like to share with you a good example of public sector management, which involves risk management and business continuity management. This is the case of the Regional Labor Court of the 8th Region (TRT-8), which structured a robust plan to resume face-to-face services for after the pandemic, within the scope of the agency’s risk management, whose adopted reference is ISO 22301 on Business Continuity.
The risk management of TRT-8 is an innovative work in the public sector, awarded last year, led by Alberto Allan da Silva Rodrigues, head of the Risk Management Section of TRT-8, with the support of Leonardo Ferraz Feliciano, Federal Judicial Analyst , specialist in Information Technology. In the last few months, it has been supported by Interact’s corporate management software, SA Strategic Adviser, with remote implementation by Ronaldo Vanzetto and Anderson Pereira, from the Interact Excellence Unit.

About the TRT-8
The TRT-8 is a public body that makes up the Union’s Judiciary, in its branch of the Labor Court, which has jurisdiction over the states of Pará and Amapá and comprises 56 Labor Courts, of which 48 are located in Pará and 8 in Amapá.
According to an assessment by the National Council of Justice, TRT-8 is ranked 1st in the Comparative Productivity of Justice Index (IPC-Jus) among the labor courts classified as medium-sized.
In 2019, of the 56 Varas do Trabalho existing in Pará and Amapá, 36 were among the 25% best in the country (1st quartile). The TRT-8 also had 2 Rods among the 10 best and 6 among the 50 best in the country. The conduct of Labor Justice in the states of Pará and Amapá is carried out by the TRT-8, which differentiates its performance in a double degree of jurisdiction, 1st and 2nd degrees.
